Candle or diffuser: which should you choose for your home?

Both scent a room, but not in the same way, and not for the same spaces. How to choose based on how you'll use it, the size of the room and your budget.

Candle or diffuser: which should you choose for your home?

It's a very simple trade-off once you put it into words: a candle is a moment, a diffuser is a backdrop. One you light, the other works on its own.

The candle: a ritual

You light it, the light changes, the scent rises quickly and stops when you blow it out. Perfect for a living room in the evening, a bathroom, a dinner.

Look at the wax — plant-based, ideally —, the cotton or wood wick, and the vessel: a nice container can later be reused as a pen pot or a small vase.

The diffuser: a constant presence

It works unattended, which makes it ideal for a hallway, a corridor, a toilet or an office. No flame, so no worries with children or pets.

Adjust the strength by the number of reeds, and turn them only once a week.

A question of room

Small room: a diffuser, otherwise the scent saturates. Large living room: a good-sized candle, or two smaller ones placed apart.

Bedroom: light the candle half an hour before, then blow it out. The scent stays, the flame doesn't.

And the budget

A good-quality candle burns for thirty to fifty hours; a diffuser lasts two to four months. Per hour of use, the two are similar — so choose based on how you'll use it, not the price on the shelf.

Frequently asked questions

Candle or diffuser for a small room?
A diffuser, with just a few reeds: the scent stays discreet and steady without saturating the space.
How do I stop a candle tunnelling?
Let it burn until the whole surface has melted the first time you light it, and trim the wick to five millimetres before each use.
Are diffusers refillable?
Many are, and it's a real thing to look for when choosing: you keep the vessel and only buy the refill.
